Maybelline Colour Drama Lip Pencils | Review & Swatches

Maybelline is a brand I want to take a moment to appreciate. I think we often take it for granted because it's such a staple on the aisles of Boots and Superdrug, but I think their products are really killing it at the moment. I must admit I've had these for a while but I thought it was time to share my thoughts on the Colour Drama Lip Pencils (£4.99 each).

From what I gather from other bloggers and from swatching shades in-store, the formula and finish of these can really depend on the shade you choose. However the three I have are quite similar in texture and finish. They're definitely a satin look as opposed to a true matte; there's a bit of a sheen to them. All three that I picked up are shimmer-free and have a creamy, easy-to-apply formula. Despite them being quite soft I didn't find them hard to sharpen and also though they are quite small I find a little goes a long way.

Due to the sheen, you will probably get a bit of transfer, however I find them to be pretty long-lasting. I picked up three shades: Nude Perfection (a darker, brown/terracotta nude), Keep It Classy (a dark pink) and Very Berry (a bright cool-toned berry). They're all seriously pigmented!

Whilst they are very lovely, I do think there's a lack of wearable shades in the line. The only on I find myself reaching for in the daytime is Nude Perfection. I know you're paying a fraction of the price you would for a Nars one but some more colours would be nice. Also they're too large to use as a lip liner, so it's definitely not a 2-in-1 or anything.

I like Nude Perfection a lot however as for the others, all in all they're nice and well worth spending a fiver on but I just didn't love them as much as I'd hoped.

  1. These are my absolute favourites although I recently noticed that I get a little bit of transfer especially with the darker shades like Keep it Classy and Red Essential which I love anyway...lovely post as always!!..xx

  2. I have one of these, not sure of the shade but it might be the very berry and I love it, not that it last forever on my lips but it is a dream to apply and looks stunning on. It does last a few hours and doesn't dry out the lips, so all in all for the price I think they are great :)

  4. I've not tried the Maybelline Colour Drama Pencils but have heard the NARS comparisons from other bloggers too. I must get round to them because like you say z it's easy to overlook Maybelline. I really don't need any more lip products but Nude Perfection looks pretty nice!

  5. I really enjoy using the berry shade I own but minimalist (peachy pink) has a much worse formula. I might try out another shade from the line, haven't used these in a while :) x

  7. I've really wanted to try one of these for a while, but like you I've never swatched a shade in store that I thought would be amazing. Hopefully they'll make more colours, but I do really like Maybelline overall! I'm using their colour tattoo's and mascaras on the daily right now.

PS. You are really killing it with your photography lately! xx

  8. Loved this post, the swatches really helped show the true colours and nude perfection looks like an amazing 'kylie jenner' shade. I've never tried lip pencils so I might give these a go, just wish they were matte!

    1. Yeah I know what you mean - the formula is very creamy but I think they would last longer and have less transfer if they were true mattes xx

  13. I completely agree, Maybelline gets it right 99% of the time, and I love their lip products. I don't think I've seen these lip pencils around though. Could be that they haven't arrived to us yet which is typical. :-)

  15. I have Nude Perfection and I really like the colour and the creamy texture. I have to say I don't reach for it as much as I thought I would, though. And I agree... they don't have many wearable shades. Hope they bring more colours out for S/S. x

  18. I haven't tried these but I LOVE how pigmented they are-and for such a low price, too! I may have to pick up the Keep It Classy one very soon! The berry one is right up my alley too, and I'm not sure if I'd really wear the nude one. Nice post!

  19. I've been wanting to try these lip pencils out, however, I can't seem to find them in the stores here, it could be they aren't in Canada yet. But they seem like they're worth the (affordable) price!

  21. I found I had the same problem just didn't really like any of the other shades available apart from Berry Much. I have seen the shade Minimalist being reviewed before but haven't found it in store so might pick that up next when I do find it as I do love the formula x

  22. I constantly rave about these, they're fab for a lip pencil product :) I agree about the textures differing, I've found Berry Much to be a lot creamier and have more sheen to it than Red Essential. Totally on you with the lack of shades too - they're the only 2 I picked up.

  23. I really love the shade Minimalist, looks super glittery but is actually just a pretty pink on the lips. I do really like them but they can be drying, but overall, a great budget product. Great post lovely :)

  25. I really love the look of these shades, and the slightly shimmery finish. I've really warmed to lip pencils and lip balms recently, as I find they don't transfer as badly as lipsticks but do a similar job so I may have to check these out.
